I would like to share with you this week some of the information I have learned about
our current International Rotary President, Shekhar Mehta, a well accomplished
Rotarian who lives in Kolkata, India, with his lovely wife, Rashi. A member of the
Rotary Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar, Shekhar has been a Rotarian since 1985. He
trained as an accountant and is a director of the India arm of Operation Eyesight
Universal, a Canada-based nonprofit focused on preventing avoidable blindness. He helped establish more than 15 eye hospitals, in several Indian states, that together carry out nearly 50,000 surgeries each year.
Shekhar started Saving Little Hearts, a project that has facilitated more than 2,500
heart surgeries for children from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and some
African countries which is now an India-wide program. And he is also the architect of the TEACH program, which aims to do nothing less than end illiteracy in India!
I was impressed with his tremendous amount of work and if you want to know more
about our International President, you will find more information on the International
Yours in Rotary
