President Glenda’s Notes - 25th May 2017

Tuesday, 06 Jun 2017

Fellow Rotarians,

The last few weeks have passed us by rather quickly.

I would like to on behalf of the club  congratulate  Rotarian  David Peechy, Lisa and William on the safe arrival of Evelyn. I am sure they are all enjoying  this special moment especially  young William who is now a big brother.

In recent years  our club has been fortunate  to  host Rotary youth exchange students. I am pleased to inform the club that  we will be hosting  a young lady from Denmark.
Bjork Hansen will soon be 17 and lives in Klaksvik which is the second largest town of the Faroe Islands. Bjork will be living with Geoff and I for the best part of 6months. I am sure we will all embrace Bjork as she settles into her new home  in our wonderful state.

At our recent Board meeting the Board approved to support the Golden Diversity  Team  for $1000.00. These girls are trying to get to Malaysia  for the F1 School Finals, they presented themselves very well at our meeting and we will no doubt hear more in the future about this team.

We also approved to fund Catholic Care Australia  for the sum of $2500.00. Catholic Care help people at risk who are in need of a credit check, birth certificate  or photo id. Sometimes  these credentials  are lost or left behind during a testing time in their lives. As we all know to obtain any form of id costs money and this is where we will assist with our donation.

The Board has also agreed to support a community  awareness campaign for Men's health. Prostate  cancer  kills more men than breast cancer. This is mainly because men do not want to be tested. This campaign  is called "Project Red Socks". Rotarian  Kim Biggelaar  has agreed to help me get this campaign  up and running and once I receive  our kits we will then have slid show presentation and hopefully someone from Prostate Cancer Council will also speak to us.

Could all Board members please make a start  on your reports for the Change Over dinner on Saturday  1st July.

Rotarian Henk and I attended the Soggy  bottom  cardboard  regatta  thankyou drinks and nibbles at the city Park on Saturday  afternoon. It was wonderful to hear from the Rotary  club of Youngtown about this event and equally wonderful to see the recipients receive an insulin  pump. Rotary  Youngtown  managed to raise enough money to supply 4 of these pumps to young people. I know I am looking forward to  next years Regatta and with luck our club can put a team together.

I look forward  to seeing  you all  on Thursday  night  at Club 55 for our social  evening.

Cheers  President Glenda  Iles
